Research Interest

My research interests lay on the field of tuberculosis (TB) in migrants, particularly children, who live in Germany and have come from countries with either a high or an intermediate burden of TB. Although Germany is a country with a low TB burden, the migratory changes experienced during the last years have implied an increase in its frequency. TB remains as a problem with clinical significance among migrants living in some settings in Germany, and incident cases of TB infection or disease are detected despite the application of screening tests after the arrival. I am interested in studying the cost-effectiveness of a systematic, practical and combined strategy that may include highly sensitive screening, monitoring and education, and compare this with current standards of screening and follow-up of TB in migrants, applied at a local level, with the aim of preventing TB disease in migrants and promoting its early detection.

Furthermore, there is a gap of knowledge regarding risk factors for TB in children, in both migrants and non-migrant populations. A comprehensive understanding of such factors could facilitate the design of a risk-based screening approach for the detection of TB in migrant children.
