DAAD Scholarship Application
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the PhD program Medical Research in Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) jointly award 2 full scholarships for doctoral candidates financed by the DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP). The PhD EPH program announces the call for DAAD-EPH applications for full scholarships for doctoral candidates, which will be financed by the DAAD GSSP. The holders of the scholarships are selected in a multi-step process jointly conducted by the DAAD and the PhD EPH program. The final decision is made by the DAAD, and the scholarships are administered by the DAAD.
The PhD EPH program is looking for highly motivated international applicants from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with excellent grades and a strong scientific interest, who have not been in Germany longer than 15 months by the time of their nomination (around April).
Please take notice of the following rules:
• At the time of application, your last final exam should have taken place during the past six years;
• Applicants must not have completed a doctorate;
• You have to have a Master's or Diploma degree;
• You have to apply through the online application tool of the PhD EPH program;
• Applications by mail/e-mail will not be accepted;
• Incomplete applications will not be considered;
• Applications which are not submitted will not be considered;
• We do not charge application fees;
• Research phases outside Germany during the funding period can be supported if they do not exceed 25% of the funding period, and do not take place directly at the beginning of the funding period.

All those wishing to be considered for a DAAD-EPH scholarship, initially apply for the PhD EPH program, following standard processes and signaling their interest to be considered for a DAAD-EPH scholarship.
If nominated by the PhD EPH program, they will then be requested to submit additional application documents, as described below. There is no need to submit these additional documents before being nominated.
Timeline for the DAAD-EPH application 2024/25:
• Opening of the online application system: Dec 1st 2024!
• Deadline for submitting the applications: Jan 31st 2025!
• Deadline for submitting the recommendation letters: Feb 7th 2025
• Invitations to the EPH interview days: around mid-March 2025
• Online interview days: beginning of April 2025
Timeline for selection process by DAAD
• April 2025: Nomination of applicants for the DAAD selection process by PhD EPH program; selected candidates have to submit a completed application form with all supporting documents via the DAAD portal.
• May to July: Final selection decision is made by a DAAD selection committee composed of University Professors;
• October 2025: Earliest date for the start of the GSSP scholarship, a German language course sponsored by the DAAD takes place for about 2-4 months.
Successful applicants will be offered a full doctoral scholarship, financed by the GSSP Programme of the DAAD. The monthly grant will be around 1300 EUR plus travel support, insurances, study and research allowances and as need arises, rent or family allowances.
