Research Interest

Critical illness myopathy (CIM), polyneuropathy (CIP) or their overlap are underdiagnosed conditions within the intensive care setting. They contribute to prolonged mechanical ventilation and ventilator wean failure and ultimately lead to significantly enhanced morbidity and mortality. Although these diagnoses occur quite frequent in the ICU and neurorehabilitation setting (the incidence varies depending on the underlying disease), scientific knowledge is limited: The therapeutic strategies are unsatisfactory and issues such as functional outcomes and long-term recovery remain unclear. In this PhD project the focus lays on the recovery trajectories during the rehabilitation period and a 2-year-follow-up period. Outcome measurements will include assessments of the ICF areas activity, participation and body functioning. Attention will be paid to the recovery according to the underlying disease, the pre-morbid health status and the type of the disease (CIP / CIM or CIMN), as this was mostly neglected so far. Applied rehabilitation therapies will be recorded in order to receive first ideas about successful therapy methods and to prepare an RCT (as so far not a single RCT about therapy exists for this group of patients).
