Project Title

Children, adolescents and families after the suicide or homicide of a close person

Research Interest

Violent deaths have an immense impact on the lives of those bereft. In a society, in which talking about death is
mostly avoided and mental issues like suicidal ideation are often thought of as the sufferers’ own fault, those affected by deaths through self-directed or interpersonal violence, face even greater burdens and challenges. Topics surrounding these deaths are often tabooed and family members stigmatised. Even though the unique situation of survivors of these losses is widely acknowledged, there exists little research on their experiences when navigating specific, related topics. This holds particularly true for affected children and adolescents, regardless of the fact, that they are more often than not among those bereaved. As it is also known that children’s trauma processing, coping and future mental health greatly depends on their carers and the psychosocial support the family experiences after the potentially traumatic event, this research desiderate is even more unfortunate and regrettable.

The aim of the study is to understand what kind of challenges carers face in these situations, and if and how they are able to remain competent and orienting for the children, thereby aiding the children in processing and preventing future mental illness. Furthermore, the carers accounts likely give insight into the requirements for the provision of suitable and specific support.
